Paver walkways and driveways

Front walks and driveways take the most punishment in a Black Hills winter. Pavers built on the right base handle it and can be reset instead of replaced.

A walkway or driveway gets shoveled, salted, buried under plowed snow and driven over every day. Near Rapid City, chinook thaws add a twist: snow melts at midday, runs into every gap, then freezes hard overnight. A paver walk or driveway copes with that when the base is built for it, and a section that heaves can be lifted and relaid instead of broken out with a jackhammer.

Which projects are most common?

  • Front walks from the driveway to the porch
  • Side and backyard paths to gates, sheds, gardens and the alley
  • Steps and landings where the lot rises toward the front door
  • Driveway borders and widening strips beside existing concrete
  • Parking pads for a camper, trailer or extra vehicle
  • Full paver driveways replacing cracked or settled slabs

What makes a walk or driveway hold up?

  • A deeper compacted base under driveways and parking pads than under walks
  • Pavers rated for vehicle traffic, often in a herringbone pattern that resists creeping
  • A strong edge restraint so tires and shovels don't push units outward
  • Drainage toward the street or yard, never toward the garage or foundation
  • Joint sand topped up after the first winter

What about steep driveways?

Hillside streets on the west side of Rapid City and in Spearfish and Lead can mean a steep drive. Textured pavers give better grip than smooth concrete, and the base and edge details matter even more on a slope because gravity keeps working on them. Ask the contractor how they'll keep units from creeping downhill and where runoff will go at the bottom.

Who handles work at the public sidewalk?

The City of Rapid City's Building Services Division lists a Sidewalk Construction Permit among its permit forms. If your new walk or driveway ties into the public sidewalk or the approach at the street, ask the contractor what the city requires for that section and who will apply. Spearfish, Sturgis and Custer handle their own street and sidewalk rules, so check with your city office.

Snow removal on pavers

With close to 50 inches of snow in an average Rapid City winter, plan how you'll clear it. Plastic shovel blades and a snow blower with its skid shoes set slightly high are easier on pavers and edges. Ask the paver maker which ice melt products they approve for the units you pick.

No two Black Hills yards are alike, so the contractor prices the job after walking the site, checking the soil, slope and access, and talking through the layout and pavers you have in mind. We don't quote prices, and any figure given over the phone is only a rough starting point.

Common questions

Do I need a permit for a paver walkway?

A walk on your own lot usually doesn't need a building permit, but work at the public sidewalk can. In Rapid City, ask Building Services about the Sidewalk Construction Permit.

Can a paver driveway hold a pickup or camper?

Yes, when the base is designed for that weight. Tell the contractor what you'll park there so they can size the base and choose the right pavers.
